For most first-time safari travelers, I recommend Tanzania. If you have your heart set on seeing rhino, or on ethical animal experiences such as the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, Kenya is the better choice.
I’m Natasha, and I’ve lived and worked in East Africa for over 12 years. Almost every first-time client asks me this question, so here is how I decide.
Why I usually recommend Tanzania for a first safari
- Shorter driving distances. Less time in the vehicle means more time watching wildlife.
- The Serengeti. It is the top safari destination in Africa, and the wildebeest migration is there for most of the year.
- Cultural experiences. Tanzania gives you time with local communities alongside the game drives.
Why I recommend Kenya for some first-timers
- Rhino. Kenya is the better country for seeing them.
- Ethical animal interactions. The Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage are places I’m happy to send guests. I don’t send guests to the Tanzanian equivalents.
Which one is right for you
| If you want | Choose |
|---|---|
| The classic first safari, with the migration and long open plains | Tanzania |
| The best chance of seeing rhino | Kenya |
| Close, ethical encounters with giraffe and elephants | Kenya |
| A trip that mixes game drives with cultural time | Tanzania |
When to go
For a first safari I recommend the dry season, July to September. Animals gather around the water, they’re easier to see, and the roads are in better shape. The rainy season is greener, quieter and cheaper, but animals are harder to find, so I save it for travelers on their third to fifth safari.
How long to stay
Plan at least 10 days, with a minimum of two nights at each camp so you aren’t packing every morning. Choose one country for a trip of two weeks. I only combine Kenya and Tanzania when you have more than two weeks.
